Description
Easter Island, located in the Pacific off the coast of Chile. Over 1000 stone monuments called Moai are scattered around the island. These statues were carved by Polynesians approx. 1000 years ago. The most visible element in the culture was the production of these massive statues that represented deified ancestors. They were carved from the basalt rock of volcanic calderas on the island.
The moai in this picture were along the trail on the Rano Raraku crater, illuminated with sunset light.
